THE HAYES FAMILY
This family has proved difficult to persue as the research has been revolving around Henry Hayes, born in Manchester abt 1833 but who moved at some point to London as a Cab Man.  Neither of his two marriages have been found, so his father's name remains a mystery at this time.

Henry Hayes was a Cab man, born in Manchester abt 1833.
He married
Emily Mills  at some time before 1871 but probably by 1860. Based on the information in the 1871 census, where he was living at 8 Margaret Street, Clerkenwell (RG10/386/20/36&37) and the 1881 Census where he was living at 12 Union Square, St. James, Clerkenwell (RG11/0353/89/38), they had the following children:

Mary Ann Hayes b 1860 St. Pancras

Charles Edward Thickpenny (d 1902)
                                             m Sep 1909 to
George Ketterer/Ketchara (b Germany 1862)

At some point between 1881 and 1891 Henry appears to have been widowed and then remarried.  he is found in 1891 living at 101 Pentonville Road, Clerkenwell (RG12/224/11/13) with wife
Elizabeth, a step-daughter Janet Redding (a tailor's assistant aged 16) and a step-son J.T. Redding aged 11.

Looking back to 1881, it appears that
Elizabeth Reading had been married to William, a cab driver and at that time they had lived in Sidney Grove, very close to Henry Hayes and Emily.  It is very likely that William died in 1885, aged 44 and that he had been a work colleague/friend of Henry.
That being the case, Henry would become step-father to these children of Elizabeth's:

Priscilla Reading b 1865 Islington
Mary A Reading b 1870 Islington
Eliza Reading b 1871 Islington
Amos Reading b 1873 Clerkenwell
Janet Maud Reading b 1875 Clerkenwell (Tailoress)
                                     m ? to ? Billing
Anne Reading b 1877 Clerkenwell
Thomas Reading b 1880 Islington

It is always possible that Henry and Elizabeth did not actually get married.
In 1901 Henry and Elizabeth were living at 35 Luard St, Private, Islington  RG13/179/113/25), together with
Janet Maud, tailoress who was now become a Billing.
Henry died on 6th December, 1910 at Islington and was buried at Islington cemetry
(plot Z/15546).

Nothing is known for certain about what happened to
Mary Ann Hayes born in 1860. It was supposed that by 1881 she was probably married, however there is an entry in the 1881 census of Southwark showing a Maray Ann Hayes, tailoress aged 22, together with a daughter Louisa Hayes aged 2 born in Southwark.
and this may well be her.

Letitia Hayes was found to be living at 44 Theberton St, London, Middlesex (RG11/0225/80/21) in 1881 as a 16 year old servant, the head of household being James Mason, a Coffee House keeper.    It is also possible that she married Thomas Burge, a carpenter, as in 1891 the couple are living at 9 Henry Street, Clerkenwell with an 8 month old niece called Adelaide E Hayes. Now, we know that Letitia's sister, Martha Adelaide Hayes  had an illegitimate daughter, Ada, and so this is almost certainly her!  Then by 1901 then Thomas and Letitia were living at 37 Southborough, East Ham, Essex (RG13/1602/71/5), Adelaide was recorded at Adelaide Burge aged 10.  Whether they had officially adopted her is not known.

Betty Elizabeth Hayes married William Herbert Carrington, a sadler major.  In 1901 they were living
at Regents Park Barracks, St Pancras  (RG13/135/113/2).

Martha Adelaide Hayes was a 20 year old servant by the time of the 1891 census, living at 8 Dinsmore Terrace, Fulham  (RG12/53/59/18).  As stated above, she was at this time, the mother of Adelaide Elizabeth Hayes born eight months earlier at Marylebone.  Her daughter was being cared for by her sister Letitia.   Martha went on to marry William Robert Callow in 1895 but he appears to have died in 1899.  It is known that she married William Briggs at some point.

Lousia Maria Hayes
married Robert Charles Streatfield in 1895.

Rebecca Amelia Hayes
was found in the 1901 census as a domestic servant living at 92 Brighton Road, Hornsey, London (RG13/208/15/21/175) for a widow, Sarah A Pope.  In June of 1901 Rebecca married
Charles Edward Thickpenny
born in 1879 Newport Pagnell. They had a daughter Dorothy May Thickpenny soon after their marriage.  Charles, however, died the following year in 1902 and Rebecca remarried George Ketterer or Ketchara in 1909.  They also had a daughter Elvera Ketchara born in 1909. George Ketterer appears on the 1901 census of Stoke Newington as a 39 year old clerk born in Germany living with his then wife Esther and children Francisca, Wilhelm, Elsa and Leonora.
